| ART IN WHISTLER
|
 |
| A resort town in the Coast Mountains, Whistler has a permanent population of fewer than 10,000 people, but its ranks swell during busy seasons, with temporary workers from around the world. More than two million people visit the town annually, to ski and snowboard in winter, and for mountain biking in the summer. The town consists of a pedestrian village that has won awards for its design. Some of the 2010 Winter Olympics events were held in Whistler.
The town and area is known for having a large population of black bears, which have a tendency to enter the populated locations in search of food. Despite this, very few attacks have been reported, and the residents are in favour of learning and teaching behaviours, rather than killing or removing the bears.
The town has been the site of various movie and television filmings, and hosts the annual Whistler Film Festival each December. The Whistler Summit Canadian film industry conference is held in conjunction with the festival.

ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
- The Whistler Village Art Gallery was founded in 1992, and showcases "distinctive Canadian and international contemporary art." Featuring emerging artists as well as established professionals, the gallery exhibits landscape, figurative, and abstract work, and sells paintings, glasswork, multimedia, and sculpture.
With two separate locations in Whistler, the gallery sees most of the two million guests that visit the town each year. The artists they show include sculptor Georgia Gerber, painters Jimmy Wright and Ronald Russon, and glass artist Steven Maslach.
- Supplying the region with works by Canadian and international artists, the Plaza Galleries is the largest gallery in the town, and offers exhibits throughout the year as well as a large collection of art for purchase. Among the gallery's features artists are watercolourist Kal Gajoum, street artist Brian Porter, acrylic painter Jennifer Vranes, mixed media artist Nakisa Seika, and even Picasso.
